There are five requirements that every Doc Lab student must fulfill in order to complete the program:

Requirement 1

MI 211 Documentary History and Theory

In this course, students will become acquainted with the key movements and films in the history of documentary filmmaking and develop an introductory understanding of the theoretical ways in which documentary films can be interpreted.

Requirement 2

MI 311 Introduction to Documentary Production

This course introduces students to the main stages of documentary filmmaking—preproduction, production, and postproduction—by having them explore cinematography, sound, narrative structures, and editing.

Requirement 3

Documentary Production – Concentration

Students must complete two courses, totaling six hours, from the following list:

Requirement 4

MI 411A Collaborative Documentary Design and Production and MI 411B Collaborative Documentary Design and Production

Students can take one or both courses of a year-long capstone in which they complete a short documentary in teams, choosing their roles in the preproduction, production, and postproduction processes and learning to collaborate with fellow crewmembers in the filmmaking process.

Requirement 5

Students need to take 15 credits in order to complete this degree. The specified coursework for this program may not equal this total. The difference must be made up of open options that are acceptable within the limits of this program. In cases of doubt, please consult an academic advisor.
